After effects, shake and stabalize lesson

For this clip we had to add a camera shake when the baseball player hit the ball, firstly we imported the footage then made a new composition, we then first selected position using the (P) shortcut and created two keyframes on the X & Y axis, one at when the player first begins to swing the bat and one when he is finished.
We then opened up the wiggler tool, this tool adds a certain amount of pixel shake a certain amount of times per second, we added 25 pixels of shake per second, this would give us the intended effect we was looking for, once we added the wiggler effect we was left with the problem of the footage moving and exposing the matte background, to fix this we added the effect motion tile, this descreetly mirrors the footage onto the exposed background and makes the footage look part of the shot.
We then rendered in H.264

The second task we had was the opposite, this was to stabilise a shaky piece of footage, to do this we firstly made a new composition, we then opened up the motion tracking workspace, we then selected the warp stabiliser setting, and after effects begun to analyse the footage, whilst the footage was being analysed we selected the smooth motion box and selected no motion, this effect makes the footage look like it was shot on a tripod. It creates this by creating offset keyframes for the left, right, top and bottom of the footage. We then rendered in in H.264

Feminist theory

For the feminist theory we have discussed within the class many different theories as to how woman are represented within cinema, we discussed that the gender of the film crew could have influence on the way that women are portrayed, we also done some research into different feminist writers, one of which was Laura Mulvey, in retrospect her theory is that women are used as a glorified marketing tool for men, a visual stimulant that drives men to watch films, this theory is interesting because it shows a womans perception of how women are portrayed in hollywood films, and her personal theories as to how women are used as a marketing tool for men.
Another piece of writing i have analysed is 'beauty myth' by Naomi Wolf, her theory is daily similar to Laura Mulvey's except she applies it to the real world, she explains several cases in restaurants for example where waitresses are made to wear revealing clothing to draw men in, she also explained how women are exploited for the way they look for every day things, such as a job interview, or an important meeting, she explains how women are judged not on their intelligence or other qualities a man would be judged on but the way they look, and that there is a constant pressure to look like the stereotypical 'pretty girl'.
The final theory i analysed was Ann Oakley's gender socialisation theory, this is where a child is stereotypically expected to be like other children, for example if a boy was playing with a spiderman toy but all the other boys at school had a batman toy he would then get a batman toy to fit the stereotype, or if a child's parents manipulated them into following the stereotypical category of all boys loving guns and playing outdoors.

Client information

For my corporate video i have contacted the building contracting company LoftcraftUK, they are a building company situated around the essex/London area, they're looking for a video promoting their latest house construction to use for their website portfolio, they have asked for a montage of animated pictures to be made, they would like the video to be around 1:30- 2:00 minutes long.

Case study for viral advert

2D Element:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1M0pbxNUF8

This is the British airways advert, there is a good example of a 2D element being used in this.
A 2D element is a two dimensional object with an X and Y axis, (it looks flat), an example of this that appears in the british airways advert is the companies logo at the end, most adverts have the companies logo at the end of the sequence, in this case their logo is two dimensional. This isn't the only appearance of 2D elements throughout the advert, there is a shot where there is a 3D animated plane flying through clouds, these are separate layers, the clouds are 2D layers that are placed next to each other to give the illusion of realism, the plane is then animated separately and added in, these combined give the illusion of a real shot.

3D Element:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tcu1ZLGwi8

This is the E-lites advert in which a baby dances, this is 3D animation, and 3D elements are used.
A 3D element is an object with three dimensions, this has an X,Y and Z axis The baby that is dancing throughout the advert is a 3D element, the baby was animated separately to the footage and then it was added back into the sequence, the reason the baby is a 3D element is because it has an X,Y and Z axis, this is what makes an element 3D.

Mattes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaVFCdwT0hk

A matte is using the foreground/background element of a sequence for an edit. This advert is one of the best examples of a matte, the process of this advert would've included an actor dancing in front of a green screen with an iPod, then the green screen would've been removed using key light, a colour solid would then be placed above the actor and finally they would change the track matte mode to stencil the character below, the iPod would've been removed seperatly using key light as well and then added back in later in the process.

Alpha channels

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tCtM8UEQv8

An alpha channel is what is left over from an image/ piece of footage that has been cut out, for example in the end of this advert the companies logo appears whilst there is footage playing in the background, this means that there would be an alpha channel present.

Key frames

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCEQoCXJ_so

Key frames are what make an animation, for an animation to exist 2 key frames must be present as there must be a start and an end. In this advert there is a 3d animated roller-coaster taking a man around new York, obviously the rollercoaster isn't real and is animated, but to animated the cart in which the man is sitting key frames would've been used, a new piece of movement would've been assigned to each Kay frame then when added together they would give the movement seen in the advert.

Layers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40DykbPa4Lc

A layer is something commonly used in programs such as photoshop and after effects, a layer is a something an image/ clip can be placed on, several layers can be combined in a sequence , as seen in the advert above at the end when the creditentials for the pepsi company appear that is a separate layer that has been added to the original footage.

Composite modes

Composite modes are most commonly known for being in the program after effects, these are like blending modes in photoshop, an example of a composite mode would be 'screen' this is where the program lowers both pieces of footage to 50% opacity and combines them to make a sequence with 100% opacity but contains both pieces of footage

Subliminal messages in disney

Disney films have been analysed for years on end by various experts, they are trying to uncover subliminal messages that were 'intentionally' placed by the creators, the main reasons for disney films being so heavily investigated is because of theories about walt disney being part of the 33 degree club, which is a secret club that is concealed in disney land, there are also theories that walt disney was working along side the illuminati, this is because of subliminal messages being placed in disney films subliminally insinuating that people should join/ inquire about the illuminati, the illuminati are a supposed superior government that are controlling the world, and are linked to mysterious deaths, such as 2 pac, and subliminal messages in media.

There are several messages that have been placed within diene films quoting the illuminati or showing the logo of the illumanati, the eye. The main source of subliminal messages are sexual references, this can be seen in the image below.

There have been hundreds and hundreds of theories as to what the subliminal messages are in disney and what they mean, but everyone can choose to see something, for example, if you want to see something your brain will piece meaningless information together to create the intended message in your head, this doesn't mean there are no subliminal messages, this means that some of them are a a matter of opinion.

What makes a director an Auter

David lynch Is known for directing the well known TV Series 'Twin Peaks' and the film 'elephant man'. He is most known for his nightmare like cinematography and visuals, these are resembles in his films, eraserhead (1977) Lost highway (1997) Inland Empire (2006)
Distinct Visual style and techniques: Dark and nightmare like cinematography, his style of mise en scene and cinematography is very uncomfortable and resembles a childhood nightmare.
The Mise en Scene contributes a lot towards the intended effect of making the viewer uncomfortable.
Twin peaks: fire walk with me US is a spin off film of the TV series, although this isn't in the full style of David Lynch's cinematography there are still aspects of his unique style, i.e, creepy shots and ideas, and creepy mise en scene.

set extension

Today we had to motion track a CG extension on to some footage, this included using the programs after effects and photoshop.
The first thing we had to do was import the footage (.MOV) to after effects, we then discovered a problem, we had to motion track the footage in two different sections, this was because the footage changed position; meaning if we would've tracked it in one go it wouldn't have worked. We selected motion track and then rotation, ( this gives you two tracking points), we tracked the first section of the footage that we wanted to be tracked, we then added a null layer and added that to the path of the motion track, we repeated this step for the second half of the tracking.
Now we had our motion track paths we had to add the castles, to do this we took a composition screen shot of the required frame and saved it as a photoshop, (.PSD) file and then opened it in photoshop.
To give the illusion of three castles being in the shot we had to duplicate the layers, to do this we right clicked the castle layer and duplicated it, we also had to take into account the different position and angle of the castle being placed at certain distances, we also added a slight background colour to each castle to distort the detail, this would make it look more realistic, once this was done we added it back into after effects and started to colour correct it, but before we done that we had to open the .PSD file within after effects and delete the background layer so it was just the three castles.
To colour correct we selected the Hue and saturation and curves, we changed these so the castles would blend in with the background, this would make it look as if the castles were there, we also added a photo filter for added realism, to finish off we added clouds and parented them to the motion track to make them look realistic, after this was finished we rendered and exported.

Evaluation

For this assignment we were required to make a promotional video for a client, the promotional video had no limitations as to what it could contain, it was all based off of what the client wanted within his video. As this was out first promotional video we had to adapt the way we worked, if we saw something better but the client wanted to keep the original then we would have to accommodate our ideas to their say.
To keep within the given timescale we were always one step ahead with the schedule and always had a back up incase the client was unable to comply to our time schedule, before the initial shoot we had several meetings and phone calls to reassure the filming dates, deadline dates and meeting dates, all of these were essential and we were in constant contact with the client to make sure these were secured dates.
For the promotional video we encountered several problems, one of the main problems was that there was only one date available for filming, this wasn't a problem but it caused a lot of stress as we needed to hire equipment and if we were unable to retrieve this equipment then we would've had bad problems, luckily the filming went very smoothly for us and we had no problems. Another problem was that there was no budget, and finding something like a copyright free soundtrack can be difficult, we over come this by contacting artists from YouTube that create copyright free music and got their permission to use a soundtrack. One other problem would be that the house in which i would be filming had no power sockets that were working, therefore lighting would be very difficult, to achieve good lighting i shot at around 11-12 during the day and made sure the exposure and ISO settings were correct on my camera, in the final draft of the promotional video i achieved good quality lighting.
The finished product was good, but it could've been more organized and better planned, this is because there was a very small time scale to produce the video because the client was so busy, this meant accommodating the level of detail to the clients time scale; so if i had more time i thick i could've produced a higher quality video. Personally i think having a client that is not knowledgeable of what they want opens a whole spectrum of problems, as having to guess what they would like can be very difficult, luckily our client liked our video.

The feedback we received from our client was very positive, we also received good feedback from social networking sites, below is a copy of the email from our client.

Production

This is the final draft of the promotional video.

Meetings and contact

the most important part of the corporate promo assignment is having regular meetings with my client, this will allow me to create accurate promotional content to his companies needs, the man i would be meeting with is called James and was the company director. Within this post i am going to be documenting all of our meetings and a brief description of what they consisted of.

Prior to the meetings with my client we had several phone calls, i will evaluate each conversation.

Phone call one:

The first phone call between me and the client mainly evolved around my offer of making a corporate video for him, we got to know each others names and he said he would get back to me if he would like to take up the offer

Phone call two:

The second phone call evolved around the client accepting my offer of making his company a corporate video, he explained how they had a new website being built and could use a small video promoting a kitchen in their latest house, to conclude the conversation we arranged the first meeting and took down basic information.

Meeting one

The first meeting I had with James was on the 17th January, this was initially and introductory meeting, in this meeting I gave him the brief to fill out, had a conversation with him in more detail going over the brief and generally getting to know more about him and his company, he filled out the form and we went over each section of the brief in more detail.

Meeting Two

The second meeting took place on the 21st February, this meeting took place in the location in which I would be filming, this was a fairly brief meeting and it was an opportunity for me to look around the filming location and for James to explain which locations within the house he wanted highlighted within the promotional video, we went over the brief again and double checked everything was in order before I returned. The final thing we went over was some pre-production, We discussed the shooting schedule to make sure he was available to be present for the shoot, we also went over a small risk assessment, shot list and budget; as he would be funding the costs.

Meeting three

The third meeting happened on the 31st of January, this was after the shoot which was on the 28th, on this meeting we were going to do the voice over, James had previously read the script and had planned for a voice actor to attend, once recorded the voice over we discussed the sound track as this would cost money to get a royalty free soundtrack, after this James was shown a first draft of the promotional video, there was several points he brought up, I noted these down and arranged for a final meeting on the 4th February.

Meeting four:

In this final meeting James watched the final video and decided that he did not want the voice actor, but everything else within the video he was happy with, i explained that i would remove the voice over and leave the music in, i emailed this footage to him on the 5th of February, (without the voice over), and he was happy, below are screenshots of the emails.

Pre-production (including sound)

Synopsis

For my corporate video i have been asked to create a short montage of shots that promote the kitchen of a new built house, this is for the companies online portfolio of work. To achieve this i am going to use a mix of medium and close up shots, i will also take some high quality pictures and animate them, i personally feel that a mix of footage and animated pictures will combine to make successful promotional content.

sound

After having several meetings with my client i will only need to find a copy right free sound track as he has specified that the only sound he wants is a fairly quiet backing track to accompany the montage of shots. To achieve this I will search YouTube for artists that post copyright free music,  will then contact them and ask for permission to use their track, the reason I am using copyright free music is because my client has a very tight budget and buying the rights to use a commercialized piece of music can be very expensive. In the original draft of the promotional video the client wanted a voice over, he had arranged for someone to record a voice over, to achieve this is used a zoom H4N, this offers very clear and crisp sound quality, in the final draft the voice over was taken out. There was no need to do any Foley as there was going to be a backing track, the client didn't want any environment noise included.

Location Report/risk assessment

The location in which I would be filming Is in a newly built house, the filming would mainly take place in the kitchen, in terms of risk assessment there is all of the risks a house would hold, worktop corners, slippery floor, etc.....

Shot list

For my shot list i am planing to use a wide range of shots to express the product to the full extent.

Shot 1- For the first shot i am going to be using the company graphics, to accompany this i am going to use a macro shot, this shot will be blurred out whilst the company graphics appear.

Shot 2- For the second shot i am going to do another macro shot.

Shot 3- for the third shot i am going to do a panning wide shot of the whole kitchen area, this will be followed by closer shots to emphasise on the detail.

shot 4- for the fourth shot i am going to do a slow zoom out medium-close shot.

shot 5- For the fifth shot i am going to do another macro shot, this is to emphasise the detail of the environment

shot 6- i am going to possibly do a macro shot/ focus pull this is still undecided but it will be one of them and this will be decided on the day.

Shot 7- For the 7th shot i am going to do a handheld pan of the whole kitchen area, i will correct any shake in warp stabiliser.

Shot 8- For the final shot i am going to have a slow panning shot and then the company logo/ graphics will appear again and this will conclude the video.

Lighting plan

For the lighting plan i am going to be shooting the video at around 11-12 day time, as i am unable to use artificial lighting due to the power not being on in the house i am going to rely on natural light for the shoot. With a combination of the right exposure and iso levels i should be able to achieve correctly lit shots. As i would be shooting in one location.

Script

For my promotional video i did not require a script, this was because there was no dialect, the original voice over was not planned by me and was not included in the final draft therefore i am unable to obtain an accurate transcript/script for the voice over. Other than the voice over there was just a variety of shots, this was covered in detail by the shot list meaning i did not require a script.

Written response to brief

The response to the clients brief was discussed in person, i will transcript the conversation as best as i can.

Hello,

After reading through the client brief i believe i can achieve all of your requests, for the mandatory inclusions i will need a high quality image of your companies logo to include in the promotional video. The filming date is fine for me, (we then discussed times), I can understand the tone and image you would like to achieve and i think i can accommodate to this. For the soundtrack i understand you don't have a budget i can work around this to find copy right free music for free. For the voice over i will come back with a first draft and then you will be able to guide the voice actor with what he says, if you have any problems or would like to alter anything just call or email me.

Overview of client brief

Below are images of the client brief.

This is the first page of the client brief, in this first section there was basic information to fill out as well as an overview of what the client wanted in his promotional video.

On the second page of the brief there was box's to fill out where the client could go into more detail about the video that was going to be made for his company, as well as the date he wanted it completed by.

On the final page there was a section dedicated to the schedule, on this the client wrote the filming date, he was only available for one day, as he was on a tight schedule. There was also a section called mandatory inclusions, this was things that had to be included in the video.

Legal/Policy

Research Market audience

The market audience of the company I am making the promotional video for is a fairly small range. The video is going to be aimed at home owners, potentially families with small families that could be looking for a loft conversion/ extension for example, or a new couple that are looking for a small extension or modernisation, I am not going to base the market audience by age but by house owners, for the fact that my clients company would mainly appeal to home owners of all ages.

Research Company

The company I am making promotional content for it Loftcraft, Loftcraft is a building company that covers all spectrums of building work, they operate around Brentwood, Essex and Parts of London.
Loftcraft have been established for 5 years and are an average sized company, for the first 4 years all marketing for their company was achieved through word of mouth, (people suggesting), it has only been recently that they have expanding their marketing department and had a website made, this is why they need the promotional video made. The video will be placed on the home page of their website for all potential customers to see.

This is a link to their website: http://www.loftcraftuk.co.uk/

Codes and conventions

Before the promotional video is made there are several steps, this is the pre-production, during pre-production things such as, script writing, story boarding and budget are discussed with the client. During production communication with the client is also very important, this is in case they change their mind or want anything added to their promotional video. Post-production, this is where a voice over or company graphics could be added to the video, contact with the client is especially important during this stage because they will want their video edited the exact way they want.

Codes and Conventions:

Inform/Message: The main purpose of the video is to inform the audience, as promotional videos can vary in length getting your intended message across is a short period of time is essential, the audiences attention will be distracted if you start using long speeches and boring monotone dialect, keeping the message, 'short and sweet', is very important as this will draw the audience into the video. A common method of inciting an audience would be using statistics, if an audience see a positive statistic then they're reassured of it's quality.

Appearance:  The audience is going to be looking at your video with the intentions of being sold/informed of a product, making that product look it's 100% best is important as this is the main selling factor to the audience; aesthetically pleasing visuals are more likely to draw an audience.

Music/sound: Music and sound is very important for a promotional video as this sets the tone of the video, for example if there was loud and heavy music then the audience will assume that the product is going to be energetic, fun and action packed, where as if there is more lethargic music then this would set the opposite tone for the audience, so picking music relevant to the promotional video is very important.

Interviews: Having interviews with past customers/clients in a promotional video can be a very strong 'bargaining tool' for your audience, the audience is looking for reassurance and security in the product they are going to be purchasing/using so having an interview with a client who is happy with the product will entice the audience reassure them that the product/service is reliable and safe.

cinematography/lighting/sound: cinematography is important in promotional videos, when taking stills/shots of the product you're trying to sell it is important to use a wide variety of shots that show off the best aspects of the product you're trying to sell, for example, if you were trying to sell a new hair dressers to the audience, including shots of the facility, equipment, staff and all other services would be more likely to entice an audience opposed to shots that do not represent/ portray the full quality of service the hairdressers has to offer. Lighting is very important in promotional videos because a well lit shot is more enticing to the eye that a dark and poorly lit shot, brighter environments are more appealing to an audience. Good quality sound is also another important factor when creating a promotional video, having a good quality mic and the right settings during an interview will make your video look ten times more professional, having good, clear audio will also draw an audience in more than distorted and 'tinny' audio.

Editing:  Editing is very important as well as having a video with a good pace and flow between transitions will keep the audience enticed. When editing together footage maintaining a 'smooth' feel to the way it is put together will keep the audience drawn in, having visual effects and fluent transitions will keep the audience engaged in your video. The common running time for a promotional video could be anywhere betwee one and six minutes, anything longer than 6 minutes would cause the audience to lose interest and anything shorter than a minute wouldn't give enough time to fully promote a product.

Here are some examples of promotional video:

The first promotional video i am going to analyse is Apple's introduction to their new iPad, the iPad mini.
the first shot of the promotional video is an interview with one of the designers, he explains the purpose behind the design and compares it to a regular iPad, this reassures the audience that they are going to get the same experience from the new iPad as they are the old. The shot is a well lit shot and the music for the video is established, it is an up beat song, this will set the tone for the video, up beat, happy and exciting. The second interviewee is a marketing worker from Apple  and he quotes, "There is no end to what you can do with it", then this quote is followed by a montage of shots where people are using the iPad mini in their everyday lives, this is then followed by another quote, "we wanted to make sure it had all of the features that make iPad magical", this is another factor that would have reassured the audience that the new iPad would be just as good as previous iPads, the same man then voices over all of the technical aspects as they appear as visuals on the screen, throughout the video the new iPad is constantly compared to the old iPad, this is because the old iPad was such a success people felt a sense of security and reliability in the product therefore comparing it to their new product would pass the reassurance on to the new product.
Throughout the rest of the video there is one more person interviewed, this is a hardware engineer, he explains how the product was built and how light it is, another main selling point for the product Apple are selling is that it can be held in one hand, this is mentioned several times throughout the video. The editing of the video is very fluent and smooth, the video is 4 minutes long, fitting into the stereotypical length of promotional videos, the way it is cut together is very appealing and aesthetically pleasing to the eye, this goes hand in hand with the lighting, sound and cinematography, the shots are all correctly lit, the sound of the interviews is impeccable and the shots are diverse and show off all of the iPad's new features. There is also a good mix of visual effects and real shots, for example, when the hardware engineer is explaining the technical aspects of the video there are visual effects of the iPad inside and out, this is showing the audience every part of the iPad for a stronger understanding of the product. Overall the message is portrayed in an enticing and appealing way to the audience.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhu0MMS7RjY

The second video i am going to look at is a promotional video for the games that are going to be released on Xbox one, (the next generation console), the first shots are fast cuts between several games, the music comes is straight away, it is fast paced, energetic and upbeat. The first title that appears on screen is 'The Biggest Blockbusters', this will instantly grip the audience as it emphasizes that Xbox one will have the 'Biggest' blockbusters, there is then more fast paced shots, this title is followed by another title that says, 'the best exclusives', and is then followed by a statistic, statistics entice the audience because they associate the positive statistic with a good product. There is then a montage of video games that are going to be released by Xbox, the music is heavy and upbeat, each game includes a statistic or quote from other clients as to how many awards it's won, or how good it has been rated, there is also a visual of unique features that games has on Xbox, the sequence then finishes with the title of the video, 'the best games are on Xbox one', followed by the companies Ident. The Promotional video is only 2 minutes long, but it is fast paced and there is a lot of content compact into the two minute running period. The video is editing with fast pace and this matches the style in which it is edited. There are no interviews in the video. I cannot comment on the cinematography/ lighting because all of the footage is recorded from the games themselves.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1uyQZNg2vE

This promotional video is for Google's new product, Google glasses. The intended message of the video is to show the audience how easy and convenient their product can be, the video consists of the view from the person wearing the glass's (POV). There are several people/situations included in the video, they diversify from everyday life to skydiving, this is a message to show the audience that the glass's are adaptable in any situation, the video also included people using the voice commands, this shows the audience the functions of the product and how easy it is to use. The music throughout the video is up beat and exciting, this sets the tone of the video for the audience. The cinematography of the video is all POV shots, this is a good marketing tool to the audience because as it says in the title it shows the audience, 'how it feels', the shots are all correctly lit aswell. The sound throughout the video is voiced over and is very good quality, and also appropriate to each shot, for example in the skydiving shot the audio is slightly distorted and there is alot of background noise. There are no interviews within the video. The video is edited together almost like a home movie, just footage taken from the Google glass's and cut together, this style of editing is appropriate and enticing to the audience it is marketing for. The video is two minutes long, this is a shorter promotional video. The final shot is of the company logo, this tells the audience who is selling the product. Overall the video portrays its indented message in an appropriate style for the type of audience it is aimed at, it also covers all of the products features and showcases them in real life situations, reassuring the audience is very important as this is what entices them to buy a product.

Summary of Stig Ident

For this assignment we were given the task of making an Ident for the 'original stig' Perry Mcarthy. The brief was presented to us by as tutor, we had to design a new Ident for him to use on his upcoming videos, the Ident would appear at the beginning of his videos. We were also given a chance to meet Perry to have a small talk with him. Once we knew the brief we begun the research, we looked at his website, various images of him using search engines, we then applied this research to create an Ident that would be handed into Perry, he would the judge the best ones and show them in a meeting with all of the people involved in the projects. This was my entry

College Brief

We have been the given the task of shooting a corporate promotion video for a 'real' client of our choice, a promotional video can be anything, for example, a music video, showreel, interviews and so on. The college have given us the option to use our own clients or if we're unable to find one then they will provide one for us.  The video that we make has to be orientated around our chosen clients needs, this will mean having meetings, giving them pre-production and giving them the option to change it and also showing them rough footage. This project will last for 6 weeks and the deadline is on the 10th of February.
We would have to keep in close contact with the client and accommodate the promotional content to their needs and have several meetings with them regarding what they wanted as they could change their mind throughout the process of creating their promotional content.
The purpose of this assignment is to gain experience on how to contact and work with various clients, we will need to make copies of pre-production and stay in close contact with them so they can explain the details of what they would like to be included in their promotional video we are going to make for them.
