James Bond feminist theory.

Slide one

Explain why you have chosen james bond, explain how it is a good example of how women have become stronger and more resilient to james bond over the years and how there roles have changed from being submissive eye candy to strong influential characters. Use Dr.NO and Skyfall as a reference.

Slide two

Explain how in Dr.NO/ the early films James Bond belittles and mentally bullies the women back into their 'place' and he would win every battle against each woman he encountered. Also talk about money penny and why she is significant, she is a female figure that has always been present in bond films and she has never been challenged by bond because she has never left her 'place'. For example in Goldfinger (1964) james bond has a fight with pussy galore before over powering her and eventually forcing himself on to her and then leaving. Thats a pattern that appears in the James bond films, once he has slept with the female character he leaves.

Slide three

use the quote "The James Bond films…depict women enjoying rape, especially since Bond is the 'good guy' and the supposed fantasy of every woman. Once raped they are then ignored by the male star." (Brabazon 2).  Also explain how pysco-analytical theory links into how women are represented, i.e, the way they dress , for example the women in the earlier bond films dress very well are perceived as 'sexy', the new James bond films the women are dressed more like soldiers and are incorporated into the biggest stereotype of James bond, the gadgets; and in the last James bond film 'Skyfall', a woman shoots James bond which for me is a blatant subliminal message that rather than a dim and unintelligent 'sex toy' for James bond they are more of an ally that can assist james bond and without their help he would fail, and i think the whole idea of the women helping james bond shows the equality trying to be shown.

Slide 4

Explain how the iconography of the bond girl changed over the years, in the early years of bond the viewer expected to see a weak minded, revealing and insignificant girl, and this was the icon of bond girls but as years progressed that began to change, the women in bond films were seen as a strong minded and hard to get icon and there were old traits that stuck for example bond girls being attractive and still eventually having sex with james bond but the way that the female characters were perceived changed completely.
